Exhibition Review:
Robert Cavallo originally became involved in the Rock 'n' Roll era from the other side
of the lens as the drummer for The Messengers, a Motown recording artist that
released its first album on the Rare Earth label. While traveling on tour, Cavallo always
kept a camera at hand to capture the best moments on and off stage. When the group
disbanded in 1972, Cavallo returned home and joined his father’s photography
business. Utilizing his concert promoter connections, Cavallo rarely missed a concert
and captured great bands such as Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, B.B. King,
Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, Queen, Pink Floyd, and The Who. Cavallo’s photographs
offer an interesting perspective only gained from his intimate first-hand experience in
the cultural and historical happenings of the Rock 'n' Roll era.
Of all the many concerts that he photographed, the Bruce Springsteen event at
the Uptown Theater on October 2, 1975 in Milwaukee, WI was probably the most
memorable one. Early in the show a bomb threat was called in and the theater had to
be cleared. The audience was told to keep their ticket stubs and the concert
would continue after the building was checked out. At about midnight, Springsteen
started up the show and played until the wee hours of the morning.

personality Bob Reitman, the emcee for the historic event.
